The San Antonio 2030 District, a regional chapter of the nation-wide SPEER initiative, has recently published their first annual report. The report provides an overview of activity from 2015-2016 and covers the strides the District has made in energy reduction this past year, updates on other pending initiatives, and previews of upcoming projects. The District calculated a total of 60 committed properties and 5.8 million square feet in commercial real estate participating in the program. What is unique to the San Antonio chapter is its predominately small business and small buildings driven participants.
All its participants have committed to a 50% reduction in energy consumption by 2030. This past year alone, the District had an energy use intensity (EUI) of 44.5% compared to the baseline of 57.1%. By calculating energy usage by this metric, participants have had an EUI reduction of 22% in the last year. One future goal for the program is to establish a baseline for measuring water consumption and traveling emissions. Further, the District is looking to create a sustainable way to reduce storm water run-off.
